Arthur Peter Mutharika, born July 18, 1940 in Thyolo district, southern Nyasaland (now Malawi), is the fifth (5th) and current president of the Republic of Malawi since independence. Mutharika has background in law and international justice after serving in different capacities across the world including as an academic.
Mutharika was elected in office during the tripartite elections of May 2014 succeeding Joyce Banda who took over office in 2012 after the death of the president Bingu wa Mutharika. Mutharika previously served as an elected member of Malawi Parliament as well as in different other capacities in his late older brother’s (Bingu wa Mutharika) administration between 2004 to 2012 prior to his death. Mutharika is also a member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the party that saw him into the office.
Mutharika is originally from Thyolo disctrict, southern of Malawi but spent most his career years in the United States of America. He is married to Getrude Maseko, and has 3 children from his previous marriage to late Christophine. Mutharika received his law degree from the University of London in 1965. He then received his LL.M and JSD degrees from Yale University in 1966 and 1969 respectively.
